Away Weeee Goooooo!

“Away weeee goooooo.” That’s the e-mail that Steve Blackmon, my IRONMAN coach, sent me today after I sent him my signed athlete contract and signed up for an account on the computer program that will control much of my life for the next 25 months.

I’m so excited!!  And a little bit terrified.  But mostly excited!!

I’ve been using a generic training program and so having something that is created for me, and is evolved based on my progress by someone who has done his share of IMs and trained other people to do them, gives me a lot more peace of mind.

Other aspects are moving forward as well. Tomorrow I’m looking at a used bike that may work for me and on Monday I have a lesson with a swim coach.

I’m 2 years and a month and a half away from IRONMAN Arizona 2016, 25ish months of training. Of course I’ll be doing a series of races leading up to the big day, I’ve chosen a marathon, Olympic Distance Tri and Half IRONMAN and I’ve got some more races to choose. (I’m 99.9% sure that IMAZ 2016 is it for me when it comes to endurance events, so these ensuing two years are my chance to get the medals I love so much, and more experience means more confidence going into the IM, plus they are good tests of my training.)

So wish me continued luck as Away Iiiiiii Goooooo!  In the meantime, here is the full Goethe quote.

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back– Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do, or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now.”

go Ragen! So I’m sucking at the running/walking part of this training. Hateses!!! But got a solid 2 mile swim down. Suggestions with swimming: be prepared to buy several pairs of goggles till you find ones you love. Then buy as many pairs as you can afford, and a few more after that. They are not all created equal. Also, working with a swim coach is great, I also like to swim at the same time as the local masters team because they can sometimes give me instruction or I can follow their workout plan, check my pace. And when all else fails, use a kick board and keep going! I’m so excited for you!!!

Hey from someone who lived in Phoenix Arizona. One-great race!! Two- Volunteer the year before and you’ll be able to register the next day. In the past that is the easiest and sometimes only way to get in. You may already know all that but just in case. Oh and being part of it as a volunteer is really inspiring, it will keep you motivated through your last year!

  10. I have done 9 sprint tris and one Olympic distance triathlon. That Olympic distance was really tough, and I had to walk much of the run. I really admire you for setting your goal this high–an IM is huge and I’m excited for you.
