It’s crunch time for me on a number of fronts. My IM 70.3 is next week, I’m co-coordinating the fat activism conference this weekend, I’m working on a bunch of projects, and I’ve been super stressed out for the past few weeks.
I was doing a swim recently and it wasn’t going very well, I was going slowly and I was struggling. The harder I tried to swim faster, the slower and I went and the worse I felt. Then I remembered one of the very first things I learned from my Total Immersion swimming coach – relax your head, let the water support it.
So that’s what I did. I relaxed my head, that relaxed the muscles in my neck, the muscles in my back followed. I was almost instantly more comfortable, my breathing was easier, my stroke evened out, my speed picked up and everything was right in the world again.
Sometimes pushing harder is what’s needed, and sometimes what’s needed is to relax.

The Fat Activism Conference is this weekend!
This is a virtual conference so you can listen to the talks by phone and/or computer wherever you are. Whether you are looking for support in your personal life with family, friends, healthcare providers etc. or you’re interested in being more public with your activism with blogging, petitions, protest, projects, online activism, or something else, this conference will give you tools and perspectives to support you and your work, and to help you make that work intentionally intersectional and inclusive, so that nobody gets left behind.
